UK Sport Chief Details Artificial Intelligence Strategy to Boost Great Britain Competitors For Future Medal Success.

Great Britain's Olympic and Paralympic Games squads need to adopt artificial intelligence and encourage greater collaboration to sustain their current elite results, as stated by UK Sport leader Nick Webborn.

"We have been a highly prosperous country, and to maintain that position or to possibly improve further, we're going to have to do things in new ways," Webborn remarked.

He emphasized the need to "be more strategic" and "leverage things like AI appropriately in sport," as well as enhancing partnerships among various sports bodies.

Harnessing Innovation for Excellence

Webborn's vision extends further than medal ambitions. He pointed to several crucial areas where AI could offer major advantages:

  • Scouting New Talent: Using analytics to identify promising athletes.
  • Reducing Injuries: Predicting and minimizing physical hazards through movement monitoring.
  • Remote Classification: Enabling fair classification for disabled sportspeople removing the need for travel.

This follows a recent declaration that British athletes would be offered AI-based protection from online abuse.

Reviewing Recent Games Results

While Team GB won 65 podium finishes at the 2024 Paris Olympics, equalling their London 2012 haul, their first-place count of 14 saw them fall to seventh in the final table.

"We want to continue punching above our weight," commented Webborn. "The focus is on those small things, how we convert those second places into gold."

Webborn additionally commended the Paralympic team, which has repeatedly finished second behind China, while observing that other nations are closing the gap.

Athlete Welfare as a Cornerstone

In his initial interview since taking up the role, Webborn placed great importance on athlete welfare and life after sport.

"Valuing the competitors who enter our high-performance sports system... preparing for their later life, so that the skills they acquire make them a better person... remains critically important to me," Webborn stated.

Webborn suggested that a caring system doesn't just creates better athletes but also more resilient individuals for the future.

Upcoming Aspirations and Staging Global Tournaments

For the future, the agency is focused on bringing world-class competitions to Britain. Scheduled events include the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the 2028 football Euros.

The chairman further voiced a future "desire" to stage the Summer Games again, potentially around 2040.

"Wasn't that brilliant in 2012? I'd like for other people of the public to have similar moments too," he reflected.

Webborn proposed that a future bid could be creative, maybe involving multiple host cities like Liverpool and Manchester co-hosting.
