Two Victims Named in Brown University Shooting as Authorities Persist in Search for Gunman.

Both young individuals who were killed in Saturday’s violent attack in Providence were being remembered Monday – while an intensive search for their killer persisted following the freeing by local law enforcement of the single suspect questioned in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, as stated by the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included vice-president of Brown’s branch of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies on social media, stating: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”

The Second Victim

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.

The victim's identification was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.

Details of the Attack

An additional nine individuals were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male arrested in a search at a hotel about 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was released from custody.

“A perpetrator remains free,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”

Community Anxiety

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our community”.

The gunman opened fire inside a lecture hall in the building on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official reported to the media outlet.

Police that searched the lodging found a pair of pistols and two loaded 30-round magazines when the person of interest was arrested, as was reported.

The Wounded Victims

Of the nine hurt, one student was released from the hospital, said the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, officials reported on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private academy in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Further Tributes

Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the group. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about over seven thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents documented across the United States so far in 2025, according to statistics.
