Greetings, and join us for our live reporting of business, the stock markets and the international finance.
Gold Hits Unprecedented $4,000 Mark
The price of gold has surged beyond $4,000 an ounce for the first time, fueling a climb propelled by worries over political drama in Japan, the French economy and the United States, where the federal government shutdown has persisted.
Spot gold rose by more than one percent to $4,029.46 an ounce, another record high, and is up fifty percent so far this year. This comes after gains of 27% last year and thirteen percent the year before.
The valuable commodity is seen as a protective asset in periods of uncertainty, and also employed as a buffer against increasing prices.
Investor Sentiment and Expert Views
Financial billionaire a market expert likened the current period to the 1970s era when rising prices and substantial public borrowing and expenditure eroded confidence in alternative investments.
It’s very much like the seventies ... where should you place your money?
Gold is a very excellent diversifier in the investment mix. If you consider it just from a strategic asset allocation perspective, you would perhaps have approximately 15% of your portfolio in gold … because it is one asset that performs strongly when the standard elements of the portfolio fall.
Trader interest for gold investments seems undiminished. Traders have been piling into gold exchange-traded funds with inflows reaching $64bn so far this year, according to the World Gold Council, with a unprecedented $17.3bn in the previous month. Monetary authorities have also been adding to reserves.
Factors Fueling the Gold Increase
Predictions of more rate reductions, worries over geopolitical and economic uncertainty, import duties and an AI bubble, along with a weak dollar have driven the surge in gold.
Ewa Manthey, market expert at a banking group, said:
Gold has experienced a record surge, increasing twofold in less than two years, driven by central bank buying as it shifts from the American currency, the administration’s protectionist measures and conflicts in the Gulf region and Ukraine.
In the future, central banks are continuing to purchase – the People’s Bank of China extended its purchasing run in the previous month for an eleventh month in a row despite historic levels – the trade conflict is continuing, international tensions persist, and ETF holdings keep growing while expectations of further easing intensify. These factors implies that gold has more potential for growth.
