The people of Israel commemorate second remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations proceed
Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still were held across the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A senior delegate involved in the negotiations said that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source said the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to close the disparities between the both parties.
Key Issues in Negotiations
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- Future administration of the region
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose sibling endured the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place feels like home now and until all the hostages are released not a single person will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.
Outside the prime minister's residence in the capital, people gathered to express their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do any agreement needed for the hostages to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Surveys now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israelis prefer the conflict to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the area of the music event, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of that day in the west side neighborhood, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"Once the dusk arrives, the fear comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my little child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we check the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis indicated additional victims had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get assistance to the south, medical staff stated.
