The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to each person."

The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
