The Game Awards' Future Class Program Appears to Be Ended
Beyond recognizing video games across multiple award categories, TGA in the past promoted a Future Class program. Those selected within the Future Class cohort were intended to embody the “bright, bold, and inclusive future” of the games industry, similar to how certain annual lists highlight influential figures. Yet, this initiative is coming to an end, as confirmed by program organizers.
Beyond Just Honor: The Purpose of Future Class
This initiative was not just a nod to standout personalities in the video game industry. It acted as a hub for networking and career advancement. While certain past members expressed gratitude for their involvement with the program, some believed that it did not do enough for its cohort. Complaints was directed at multiple aspects of Future Class, including the insufficient support to attend the event to not paying for guiding new members.
Recent Issues and Initiative Suspension
Future Class seemed to be paused in the current year, when TGA omitted the recognition from its schedule. This omission followed a previous year issue where a number of Future Class participants supported a open letter urging the event to leverage its influence to voice support for a humanitarian situation.
"You gave us the role of representatives of a brighter tomorrow — therefore, our obligation to you and all the players world-wide drives us to speak up," the message stated.
It additionally claimed that the gaming industry routinely dehumanized certain groups, and challenged developers in the industry to improve.
Formal Announcement and Website Updates
Though this is the second year that TGA has omitted a Future Class cohort, event organizers had not formally declared its cancellation previously. The absence has been observed, partly, due to the apparent erasure of all references of the program on the official Game Awards website. The show creator and producer has not yet replied to a request for comment.
TGA 2025 are scheduled for Dec. 11.
