The Finnish Team Upsets Back-to-Back Defending Title Holders the United States in U20 World Championship Quarter-Finals.
Finland's Arttu Välilä netted the winner at 2:11 of extra time as Finland pulled off a stunning four to three win over the reigning two-time champion American team on Friday night in the IIHF World Junior Championship quarter-finals.
"We must give credit to the US," remarked Finnish captain A. Kiviharju. "That's a fantastic squad, full of exceptional individuals and a well coached team. But I mentioned we were seeking that revenge from the previous final, and I think we truly deserved it tonight."
In the semi-finals Sunday, Finland will take on Sweden, while the Canadians will play Czechia. Sweden defeated Latvia 6-3, Canada produced a five-goal first period in a 7-1 romp over Slovakia, and the Czechs overcame the Swiss by a six to two margin.
Thrilling Third Period and Extra Session
Michigan State’s Lee Ryker knotted the score for the U.S. team with 1:33 remaining in regulation and the University of Notre Dame netminder Nick Kempf off for an extra attacker.
Lee Tuuva and J. Saarelainen scored in a 55-second burst in the third period to give Finland a two to one lead. He leveled the score at 2 with seven minutes and seventeen seconds to go, then set up his teammate's game-leading goal with 6:22 remaining. J. Saarelainen also earned a helper on Tuuva’s goal.
Key Performances and Post-Game Comments
The BU blueliner C. Hutson recorded a goal and a helper for the United States after being struck in the back of the head against the Swiss and sitting out two games.
"In my opinion we made good plays for most of the game," Hutson said. "But the small details that they got, a lot of their Grade-A chances resulted from our errors."
His university colleague Cole Eiserman handed the U.S. a two to one edge on a power play with 9:45 remaining in the middle frame. He took a feed from his teammate and fooled Petteri Rimpinen with a one-timer from the right circle.
C. Hutson tallied on a rush thirty-five seconds into the second period. Heikki Ruohonen equalized at 4:46 on a snap shot from the left wing.
Goaltending Stats
- Rimpinen stopped 28 shots.
- Kempf made twenty-one stops.
The Americans lost their last two games – falling six to three to Sweden on Wednesday night in the final preliminary game – after winning their first three.
"It was an privilege to coach this group," said the American bench boss. "Our guys played a great game today and came up just short. Give the Finns. It's an empty emotion at the moment, but our players left everything on the ice."
Additional Quarter-Final Results
In the second match in the host city, the Canadians routed Slovakia with the five-goal first.
C. Reschny, Tij Iginla, Michael Misa, S. O'Reilly and Brady Martin tallied in the opening twenty minutes, and P. Martone and Cole Beaudoin connected in the following period. Jack Ivankovic made 21 saves.
"This demonstrates how dominant we are," Martin remarked. "Going up 5-0 lead, it really kills their confidence."
In the first quarter-final, Anton Frondell netted a pair for Sweden against Latvia. The defenseman L. Sahlin Wallenius had a goal and two assists to aid the Swedes remain perfect in five games.
Meanwhile, in Minneapolis T. Galvas, S. Drancak, A. Jiricek, P. Sikora, J. Klima and Jakub Fibigr scored for the Czech team.
Consolation Match Result
Germany triumphed in the relegation game, defeating the Danes 8-4. Manuel Schams scored twice to ensure Germany keep its spot next year in the main event. Denmark dropped to the second tier.
