The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
