Senegal's Emerging Star Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough

That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, having been shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
