Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed for World Cup Despite Objections from Egypt and Iran
Arrangements to hold LGBTQ+ rights celebrations in Seattle amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, despite the Egyptian and Iranian football federations voiced objections regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy Alongside External Festivities
Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the Group G fixture featuring Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags inside the match venue.
“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Legal Background of Formal Complaints
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation declared it did not want to be linked to celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance on Symbols
Fifa maintains operational control of stadiums during games. While its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of flags being seized.
- The Pride Match was an idea created to highlight the city's longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
- A design contest is underway to produce artwork to commemorate the occasion.
- Planners are committed to making sure all fans are welcomed in the city throughout the tournament.
The region is home to one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing everyone encounter the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our part of the country,” the statement concluded.
