Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He battled the law and the law prevailed.

A couple of months following receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally seems destined for incarceration.

Expected Incarceration

The adjudicated plotter – who's been living under residential detention in his mansion while a set of judicial steps and petitions unfold – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the near future, amid increasing talk that he will be transferred to a well-known top-security prison.

Past Remarks on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the right-wing ex- paratrooper displayed minimal sympathy for the country's prison population.

“Why should we provide those lowlifes a good life?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be messed, end of story. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to finish in prison, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Facility Speculation

However the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, several of whom this week inspected the facility in an apparent attempt to discourage the judiciary from sending him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, stated he expected the elderly politician to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute digestive ailments – the result of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 presidential election race – signified it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His condition is very grave. He cannot to manage if they move him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells containing four dozen detainees: “It's practically one square meter per inmate.

“We conversed to the prisoners and they grumble, naturally, of the horrible meals,” continued the senator.

Backers Speak Out

He is not the only voice expressing views before the one-time head of state's predicted incarceration.

Writing in a major daily, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the biggest political injustice in its record”.

“It is an injustice that eats away the spirits of many of Brazilians,” the former minister said.

Mixed General Opinion

It is possibly true given the substantial backing Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. Yet his predicted imprisonment has also warmed the hearts of many other people who think he ought to be imprisoned for plotting to stop the incoming president from assuming office – and even conspiring to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a politician for the incumbent administration's allied group, stated: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to obtain proper care – but proper care while incarcerated. He can’t continue being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long celebrating the severe handling of inmates, had abruptly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the extreme right – which has repeatedly asserted that human rights were not for lawbreakers – chosen to inspect a penitentiary to learn what conditions are really like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, degrading treatment”.

Likely Jail Conditions

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently houses about thousands of prisoners, his probable location looks to be a nearby penitentiary for officers and other “special” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are far more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although still a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the impressive presidential palace, approximately a short distance away.

Based on information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – about the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and contains a 12 square meter WC with a bathing area and a 12 square meter balcony. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a television and also a minibar in his room as long as they were supplied by his family,” the report stated.

Partisan Comments

He condemned the rumoured proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will rule on his future in the {
