Weather experts are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue In Spite of Forecasts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the weather service.

Celebrations Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks shows, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be cold, meaning extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, advisories are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public have been urged to plan for delays for trips on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on public transport.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Advisories Issued

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this signified the weather could to lead to notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is utterly paramount.
