McLaren F1 team executives Brown and Andrea Stella blamed opposing racers for the collision between Piastri and Norris at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

Piastri, leading his teammate in the standings by twenty-two points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with Sauber's Hulkenberg.

The crash took both team drivers out of the race, along with the Fernando Alonso, who was on the inside of the Sauber driver.

Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Incident

Zak Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, told broadcasters that some of the racing at the start was "unprofessional", remarking: "Clearly Nico made contact with Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 team principal Stella commented: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the opportunity to compete."

"It is unexpected that some drivers with a lot of experience fail to act with appropriate caution. Go to the first corner, make sure you avoid harming other drivers and continue."

The team indicated that Stella was mentioning both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.

Contrasting Views on the Crash

However, 1996 world champion Damon Hill, providing analysis for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he thought the Australian had not shown enough awareness of the dangers of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.

The Australian had a better start than Norris and at first challenged on the outside on the ascending entry to the turn.

But he then cut back in an effort to get a advantage on Norris on the way out, only to collide with the Sauber driver.

Driver Reactions After the Incident

Piastri said: "Not ideal but I haven't seen what occurred, I attempted to cut back on Norris and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Lando. Unfortunate."

Norris said: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Behind us events unfolded and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more people further back just being a bit reckless and we are the result of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I believed I was in the right place on the inside, but some cars came very fast from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the center."

Hulkenberg, who had qualified a season-best fourth place, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from yesterday in the trash. Just messy."

"Piastri turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the undercut and exit of Turn One but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to leave space for him and then Piastri steered inward and the contact was unavoidable."

Post-Crash and Team Response

The team will review the incident with their drivers but not until the event weekend. Both cars needed extensive work before qualifying session at 22:00 BST on the weekend.

Stella said: "Overall disappointed but we take it on the chin, we are now concentrating on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."

"We are in a strong position from our performance point of view so I hope we have the possibility to compete, race normally and utilize our capabilities."

"Championship points are the key thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just prudence. A bit more prudence would be beneficial for all involved."

Championship Implications

The race was won by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and thirty-three adrift of the Briton.

Stella said: "The implication is what the maths says - we missed out on eight championship points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a very competitive car and two strong drivers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

The Red Bull driver said he was taking the championship race by race.
