Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
