Manchester City's manager Voices Regret Over Camera Operator Altercation Following Defeat to Newcastle
Pep Guardiola has admitted experiencing "embarrassment" following an exchange with a TV crew member subsequent to Manchester City's loss away to the Magpies on Saturday.
At full time, a visibly upset Guardiola stepped onto the field and had heated discussions with the referee, Sam Barrott and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães, while also handling the broadcast crew's equipment.
"I said sorry," the manager remarked. "I feel embarrassed, ashamed, looking back. It's not acceptable. I immediately apologized to the cameraman. I am who I am. After 1,000 games I’m not a perfect person, I make huge mistakes."
"One thing is certain, I stand by my team and club, without a doubt. Why I support my squad is clear – based on my career to clinch the title we need near-perfect totals, high nineties, or we fall short."
Team Standing and Guardiola's Assessment
City are third and trail leaders Arsenal by seven points following their fourth loss this campaign. "Four defeats in twelve matches means we must do better," he conceded. "Mathematically, it’s possible still achieve all."
When questioned about a potential quadruple could be achieved, he responded: "As a seasoned reporter, did you hear my talk about the quadruple last winter during our historic run? Never."
Interaction with Guimarães
Regarding his confrontation with Guimarães, Guardiola said: "We have known Bruno for many years and post-match, even at the Etihad, we talk in the tunnel. We often meet and I always have a good relationship. I love it. I’m an emotional guy, I love to talk and move my hands."
Guardiola would not be concerned if an opposition manager addressed his squad right after the final whistle. "No - as long as you talk with respect like I always have done, it’s not a problem," he noted, mentioning the referee. "He was part of it throughout the match, constantly. My God, very much so."
Controversial Decisions
City were unhappy that the officials did not award City a penalty for a Fabian Schär challenge against Foden, and doubted Bruno's positioning on Barnes' goal Newcastle’s 70th-minute winner. Pictures published later show he was level.
Upcoming Milestone
He will manage of his 100th Champions League game versus Leverkusen on Tuesday. "It’s quite good, showing we compete annually," he said.
The club has ten points after four games of the league phase, and Leverkusen hold five.
