Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities released video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
