From The Last of Us Co-Director Comes a Fresh Project That Looks Very Different But Evolves Familiar Concepts.
The acclaimed co-director responsible for The Last of Us is crafting a new venture into game development. The upcoming game, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the debut for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, a project that will build on the legacy he helped create with a focus on characters that learn and adapt.
Introducing a Novel Adventure Game Concept
Revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a character-puzzle-platformer. The game follows Gertie, a hero that challenges typical power fantasies. The core idea stemmed from an interest in re-examining standard narrative tropes.
"What if you lacked combat prowess? Perhaps you are not built for battle? An aging witch, for instance?" posed the director. "This felt deeply interesting to question what makes a hero. A hero is about overcoming problems, including traits like dedication, resolve, and tenacity."
A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work
While the game looks different at first glance, its groundbreaking system builds directly upon of the work developed for The Last of Us. The game's conception was inspired by a central inquiry: "How could one create Ellie more dynamic and responsive to the player?"
The companion creature in the game is far from a scripted follower. It is essentially a curious child which observes and responds with evolving behaviors. First, it investigates its surroundings, which can cause unexpected chaos. Next, it enters a playful state. Finally, it analyzes to understand grasping cause and effect.
- For example: If the creature sees the witch solving a puzzle, it grasps the physical act without knowing the purpose.
- It will then start picking up various things and test fitting them, mimicking the behavior.
- The 'why' is learned only when it accidentally solves an obstacle, creating a genuine learning moment.
A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative
This complex system aims to foster a deeply personal experience. The creative lead highlights that Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a contemplative journey of exploration instead of a scripted, action-heavy path.
"Each effort to insert traditional three-act structure into this game, the magic dissipated," he stated. "The core appeal between these characters is that each individual player are going to have different sparks and narrative compared to my playthrough."
This focus on player-defined experiences, this upcoming game represents both a continuation and a bold new direction from the director’s well-known franchises. The project is currently targeting computer systems.
