Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials voiced anger after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be arrested and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Content That Triggered the Dispute
The recorded message, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously worked in military or security capacities.
"As we did, you all swore an vow to defend and support this constitution," the lawmakers affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the dangers to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you must decline improper directives. No one has to follow orders that break the law or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement reportedly trigger a heated response from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials Respond
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats released a unified announcement condemning the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all worked our country with tremendous patriotism and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to guarantee the safety of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme online messages and withdraw his violent discourse before he causes harm," the announcement continued.
Lawmakers' Strong Response
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a response.
"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who value this United States and took an pledge to safeguard and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we plan to honor it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that important obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president deems it punishable by execution for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the constitution and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "The entire nation must join forces and denounce the president's demands for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
Further Political Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the death of government members."
He added: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and unconditionally."
The Conservative official supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the government advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also allegedly informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to analyze the language and establish all that."
Administration Statement
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative responded: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the president is addressing," the official stated. "We see current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a recorded statement to personnel of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the president's proper directives."
She said: "The purity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
