Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company with his partner, disclosed how he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within an individual series showcasing issues the company has been barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the continuing disagreement among the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders maintain how Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol of Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism and Recent Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which was first established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed how he will create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been compromised after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented that “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
