As Swimmers Escaped Danger, Popular Picture Depicts Lifeguard Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, similar to other others in the area, heard cracking sounds echoing around the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching states. She left her residence, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the avenue, speaking to a pair who had hurried up the hill soaked, she became aware of someone approaching from behind. It was a lifeguard, running at full speed to Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the direction that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He moved at something that surely every instinct would tell you to run in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully maximum effort racing.”

An Iconic Image of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous moments of courage in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, law enforcement and medical teams attending to dozens of those hurt.

Collective Response and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to come out of the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the site of the incident transforming into a temporary treatment center. It was shared that colleagues were also seen taking action, including rushing into the water to rescue people who were struggling.

After the tragedy, statements of gratitude circulated widely. One post conveyed appreciation for the lifeguards who exhibited that “compassion will always triumph over darkness”.

The group of beach patrol later shared a message, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind sentiments and support. We are deeply moved by the care shown towards our personnel,” the organization stated. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the hope that it aids those involved.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many full-time lifeguards, stated that the team acted heroically from the instant the incident commenced right into late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” commented a council representative.

“The team exhibit dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic coastlines protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.

“As we grieve and process the terror of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is vital that we consider just how much good we have witnessed in the presence of such darkness.”
